Week #25

I was looking at the calendar last week and realized that our mission is one third done and it seems we just started. If this were a six month mission we would be done. I'm just starting to feel somewhat comfortable with my assignment.

Pig out
Our big event this weeks was a trip to Branson, MO to see the play "Ester". I wasn't expecting much and mostly wanted to get out Dodge for a while. We had to get the mission president's permission to go as it is out of our mission. It is a three and a half hour drive south of Independence. We left Friday afternoon and took Elder and Sister Moses with us while three sisters from the office, plus Sister Welbern, left an hour after us in another car.  The office was closed an hour early. They stayed in a timeshare while we rented a motel room. The motel was right on The Strip, as they call it. It is a night and day difference from The Strip in Las Vegas. We got down there about 7:00 p.m. and got settled into our rooms and then walked across the street to a barbeque joint for dinner. The portions were a bit too big and we were plenty full when we were done.
Most kids have never heard of this guy

The next morning after breakfast, mom and I walked a portion of The Strip and took pictures of some of the attractions. There is a little something for everyone, even King Kong on a skyscraper, and all is very family friendly.

Sight and Sound Theatre
As I said, I wasn't expecting much from the play but was very pleasantly surprised. What an elaborate production! If anyone is coming this way they need to make sure they schedule a couple of days in Branson to see the play and all the sites. But be prepared to spend some money. The kids will love Branson and even enjoy the play. There were nine species of live animals in it; horses (who trotted down the aisles), a dog, mules/donkeys, llamas, doves, parrots, ponies, goats, and camels. There was even a mama and baby elephant that looked real but wasn't. The whole set was massive and surrounded us on three sides. The play was excellently done with nary a swear word. And the audience was fun with a good mixture of old and young. I was so very impressed with how open people are with their faith. There were loud cheers whenever one of the characters quoted a Biblical scripture. Lots of attendees wore shirts with scripture quotes on them. Apparently the play gets millions of visitors a year and here I'd never heard of it. Anyway, it is a must see when you are near.

Bedding to be washed
A lady working the gift shop at the play told us of the Hughes Brothers show in Branson. She said it is a show with an all "Mormon" cast with forty-eight family members. She thought it is the best venue in Branson, particularly their Christmas program. That would be fun to see.

In other news, we picked up six new Chevys this week. I guess I have become the designated van driver which is kind of scary. I don't mind driving if I know where I'm going but usually I have to drive by the GPS directions and have a navigator. But so far so good.

After washing and packing
With departing missionaries that means mom had loads of clothes to do. I'm not sure anyone appreciates the amount of washing and packaging she does to get stuff ready for new missionaries.

There was another baptism in the branch today. LaShawn became a member of the Church. A very pretty girl with beautiful braided hair.

Next week is stake conference for us. Someone decided Mother's Day would be a good day for fast and testimony meeting. Either he isn't married or he's still hearing about his mistake right now.

LaShawn
