Week #3
I had a pretty good week and continue to try and understand the procedures here. I still make way too many mistakes. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm asking this 75 year old brain and deaf ears to do too much. Maybe it is time to retire to a simple kind of mission if there is such. I least I didn't lose the keys this week.
Mom talked about our visit to Haun's Mill and Far West. I rather enjoyed the ride as there was little traffic and the Moses' made good riding companions. The whole trip only took about six hours and we were in no hurry. The roads were on rolling hills and you just hoped everyone stayed in their lane as you couldn't see approaching cars. I had always thought of Missouri as being flat but it is anything but. Just not any mountains.
Shoal Creek runs along beside Haun's Mill and anytime there is any significant rainfall the whole place is flooded. The state built a new bridge into the site in hopes that the flooding will be alleviated. It's a pretty little spot and very isolated. Somewhere on the property is a well where the bodies of the men and boys killed in the massacre are buried but the church has not been able to locate the well. Mom says they are resurrected. I think there were 17 or 18 killed.
Mom and I are wearing our "Light the World" scarves that were provided for the missionaries.
We like them and wear them about everywhere.

We then headed a few miles over to Breckenridge to see the mill stone from Haun's mill. The town is abou dead with abandoned and falling down buildings all along the "main" drag. They need to have a fire. The picture shows only one portion of the street and the rest is worse.
The Apostles left for there missions to England from this spot in fulfillment of Joseph Smith's prophecy. They had to gather in the middle of the night to escape the mobs.
This week there is also a seniors district meeting. It is at nine in the morning Wednesday on Zoom but we will be busy I'm sure. Never heard of a seniors district meeting. In Russia, we attended district meeting with the young missionaries.
After Breckenridge we headed to the more prosperous city of Hamilton. Apparently, it was about dead until it became the capitol of Missouri's quilting fanatics. I read about it in the LDS Living magazine and I think the whole thing was started by a member of the Church and her family. Now the whole town is dedicated to quilting and gets thousands of visitors a year - mostly old ladies for some reason.😏
(I don't know why this was left blank!!👿)
The pictures show some of the murals on the sides of buildings. Mom and I both like the railroad one the best. Notice in the one above that Hamilton is also the boyhood home of J.C. Penney.

We had lunch at a Mexican restaurant - the only eating joint open in town. It was good and actually authentic. The waiter didn't understand much English. He was quite distracted as Mexico was playing on TV in the World Cup. Glad we were out of there before they lost.
Then it was on to Far West. Again, it is a quiet and isolated place. A very peaceful feeling knowing that Apostles and Prophets walked the ground we were walking on. Pictured is the monument erected to commemorate the laying of the cornerstones for the temple.

We dropped off the Moses' at their place at the Liberty jail and headed for home. On the way I stopped for gas. Couldn't pass it up. Most places around Independence are $3.05 a gallon and this place was $2.79. Makes me wonder what is wrong with the gas.
Never thought I'd see it again |
Last night we had the predicted rain but no snow. By this morning it was just wet. We enjoyed another good day in the branch. On the way to and from the branch we pass by Arrowhead stadium where the Chiefs play and they had a home game today. The parking lot was packed 2 hours before the start but traffic on the freeway wasn't bad. They love their Chiefs. The Royals ballpark is also located there.
We had a really nice Thanksgiving dinner with the other stray seniors. The sisters outdo themselves when they are bringing food for others. We played Charades and a couple of other games and I endured. Monday is FHE game night and I think we will pass. There are all kinds of extra curricular activites for the senior couples so we will pick and choose which we attend. It seems there is something going on a couple of times a week. We also got a call from Brelynn on Thanksgiving day. That was special. We were out for a walk and showed her the complex where we live.

Thought I had better include a picture of the Moses'. They are from Preston, Idaho and are only out for six months as he has some medical problems and needs to be back for doctor appointments.

Also got a picture of the seashell, unicorn, or spacecraft that we see each night as we leave the office. It is really the Community of Christ temple.
One of my favorite scriptures:
And moreover, I would desire that ye should consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God. For behold, they are blessed in all things, both temporal and spiritual; and if they hold out faithful to the end they are received into heaven, that thereby they may dwell with God in a state of never-ending happiness. O remember, remember that these things are true; for the Lord God hath spoken it.
Mosiah 2:41
